YECAP Unconference #3 Kicks Off Climate Conversations ahead of Climate Week and Regional Dialogue

The event outcomes will contribute to the YECAP Climate Action Week and the Road to 10th APFSD: Regional Dialogue on Youth Empowerment in Climate Action in March 2023

On 20 January 2023, the Youth Empowerment in Climate Action Platform (YECAP) and the YECAP Fellows organized Unconference #3, bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds working on various climate issues.


Moving beyond the traditional conference format, Unconference is fully participant-led and participant-driven and allows everyone to generate topics and contribute to the discussions.

The two-hour event convened and meaningfully engaged with 147 youth and professionals from across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss the impacts of climate change, freely exchange knowledge, establish a strong network and plan climate action.

  • Sean Lees, Business and Human Rights Specialist from UNDP led the keynote session on Business and Human Rights in the Context of Climate Action.

  • International Agreement Lead, Climate Relations and YECAP Fellow, Puteri Majid; and Social Responsibility Practitioner Executive Member, Knowcarbon and YECAP Fellow, Junru Hao led the discussion session on Sustainable Development and Green Environmental Policy.

  • Serena Bashal, Adolescent and Youth Environmental Engagement Coordinator from UNICEF and Kin Htet Wai, Independent Technical Consultant and YECAP Fellow led the discussion session on Climate Change Impacts on Children and Adolescents.

  • Tahreem Jatoi, Climate Accountapreneur, Accountability Lab and YECAP Fellow; and Fithriyyah, Project Leader, Asia-Pacific Climate Project and YECAP Fellow led the discussion session on Climate Change and Health.

  • Barsha Lekhi, Indigenous Engagement Specialist, Natural Sciences, UNESCO Nepal and YECAP Fellow; and Sachidanand Kumar, Ph.D. Scholar, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) and YECAP Fellow led the discussion session on Adaptation and Mitigation of Climate Change.

  • Southida Souliyavong, National Coordinator, ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity and YECAP Fellow; and Chao Hemajit Dewdhai Phukan, Director of Sustainability, International Youth Society and YECAP Fellow led the discussion session on Climate Change and Marine Ecosystem.

  • Saumya Surbhi, Young Environment Human Rights Protection Coordinator, UNDP; and Farzana Faruk Jhumu, Associate Coordinator, 350.org led the discussion session on Climate Justice and Inequality.

At the end of the Unconference, the Road to 10th APFSD: Regional Dialogue on Youth Empowerment in Climate Action dates were announced; happening on 23-24 March 2023.

Youth Empowerment in Climate Action Platform

The Youth Empowerment in Climate Action Platform (YECAP) was established by UNDP in Asia and the Pacific in collaboration with UNFCCC RCC Asia and the Pacific, UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific, UNICEF South Asia, British Council, YOUNGO, Movers Programme, and 2030 Youth Force in response to young people across the region calling for urgent action on the climate agenda. Youth in all their diverse identities and experiences advance their climate journeys with the support from YECAP to meaningfully engage in action, advocacy, and acceleration of the movement towards a just climate future.
